Binibini Queens headline CANVAS for book giving activity

Binibining Pilipinas Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas and Binibining Pilipinas International Mariel De Leon took time out of their busy schedules to visit over 100 children for The Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development’s (CANVAS) book giving activity at the SB TESDA Building along C.P. Garcia in Diliman, Quezon City.

The beauties enchanted the spellbound children during the storytelling portion, where they read CANVAS’ latest children’s book entitled “Panyaan: Three Tales of the Tagbanua.”

Illustrated by artist Sergio “Serge” Bumatay III in acrylic, Rhandee Garlitos authored the first two stories in the book, entitled “The Secret of the Sacred Islet,” and “Apong Dakulo” (Great Elder). The Bb. Pilipinas queens read the third story called “Pablo and the Zebra” by Annette A. Ferrer.

After a short introduction from writer Ms. Annette A. Ferrer of CANVAS, the two queens took turns reading to the kids, and showing the enlarged artwork from the book. The wide-eyed kids had a great time hearing the story of Pablo and his grandfather, who does not like zebras. Each child received a copy of “Panyaan,” and Pizza Hut provided lunch for everyone after the event.

CANVAS has been working with foundations under the Araneta Group, including the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) since 2014. It has also donated books to the beneficiaries of the J. Amado Araneta Foundation (JAAF), the CSR arm of the Araneta Group, in Visayas.

CANVAS is a non-profit organization that works with the creative community to promote children’s literacy, and appreciation for Philippine art, culture and the environment. It publishes children’s books through the Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Writing Competition, and donates proceeds from sales to underprivileged communities.

Founded by Stella Márquez Araneta, the Binibining Pilipinas pageant is BPCI’s primary instrument in nation-building efforts. Every year, BPCI partners with various private, as well as public organizations for fund-raising and humanitarian missions that benefit marginalized sectors of society. Binibining Pilipinas pageant participants and title holders have also been in the forefront of BPCI charity activities.
