BEAUTIES AND THE BEST IN ARANETA CENTER’S GRAND SANTACRUZAN 2010
Amid the rhythmic beat of the drums and the festive atmosphere that fanned the excitement of thousands of spectators, fifty beauteous “sagalas” to mark the 50 golden years of Araneta Center regally walked towards the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary to, one-by-one, offer bouquets of flowers in homage. This was the finale of the Grand Santacruzan, part of the celebration of Araneta Center’s 50th year which was held to honor the Holy Mother and to celebrate the month of flowers.
The much-awaited and eagerly-anticipated annual Grand Santacruzan of Araneta Center commemorates Queen Helena’s search for the Holy Cross. A popular and highly revered tradition in Filipino culture, the “sagalas” this year were led by former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz as Reyna Emperatriz and 2005 Bb. Pilipinas-World Carlene Aguilar as Reyna Elena. 2010 Bb. Pilipinas-World Czarina Gatbonton reigned as Queen of All Nations with 2010 Miss Universe-Philippines Maria Venus Raj as Reyna de los Angeles, and 2000 Miss Universe-Philippines Nina Ricci Alagao as Reyna de los Flores. Forty-five other lovely “sagalas” represented the various characters (“reynas”) of the commemoration, the "Accolades of Our Lady," and paraded around the Center underneath lavishly decorated arches.
Featuring the best of Philippine Fiestas in a spectacular celebration which started with a Holy Mass to dedicate the occasion to the Virgin Mary, the Santacruzan, a solemn procession honoring the Blessed Virgin, kicked-off at the Green Gate of the Araneta Coliseum. It also finished at the Green Gate, where the participants (reynas, sagalas, and consorts) gave homage to the Holy Mother by reverently offering garlands of flowers at an altar specially constructed for the occasion.
