Shamcey, Smile Ambassador for Miss Universe 2011

Day 5 in Brazil gives Miss Philippines, Shamcey Supsup, so much more to smile about.

Out of 89 candidates, Shamcey was handpicked together with three other candidates - Zilin Luo (Miss China), Vanessa Goncalves (Miss Venezuela) and Priscila Machado (Miss Brazil) - to join reigning Miss Universe Ximena Navarette as an Ambassador for Operation Smile.

"Had a great day today," she writes after visiting Sao Paolo Hospital. The ladies met three patients aged 6 months, 6 and 14 years old, who were scheduled for a free cleft lip surgery. Earlier in the day, the beauties had a brief press conference, spent some time playing with the kids and witnessed the doctors prepare for the treatment. They then joined the doctors in the surgery room and observed the operation. "[It was my] first time to be in a surgery room and it was a great experience," Shamcey shares.

“We gave them back to their families after the surgery and you could just see how happy they were to find their children well and cured,” she continues. “It was a fulfilling experience. God has really placed me here for a higher purpose.”

Aptly so, Operation Smile was founded by Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee in 1982, having been inspired by their cleft repair mission in the Philippines.
The visit was part of the Miss Universe Pageant's lineup of charity programs and activities this year. Though the Miss Universe Organization has not revealed their criteria for choosing the four ambassadors, online polls and forums show them as four of the favorites / front liners among netizens. Other famous Smile Ambassadors include Donald Trump Jr., David Pomeranz, Jessica Simpson, Jackie Chan and our very own, Charice.
