Binibining Pilipinas Proclaims the Newest Queens
The newest batch of the country’s fairest was proclaimed during the Binibining Pilipinas 2008 Grand Coronation Night held last Saturday, March 8 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Hailed as winners were Patricia Fernandez, Bb. Pilipinas International; Jennifer Barrientos, Bb. Pilipinas Universe; and Janina San Miguel, Bb. Pilipinas World. The three new queens bested 21 other candidates as they competed in the major categories, namely, swimsuit, long gown, and the Q&A portion. Fernandez also took home a special award as Miss Natasha while San Miguel won Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown.
Meanwhile, Danielle Castaño and Elizabeth Nacuspag were proclaimed 1st and 2nd runner-up, respectively. Castaño, who was among the crowd favorites that night, also took home several special awards such as Miss Bacchus Energy Drink, Miss Photogenic, Miss Philippine Airlines, Miss Natasha Poise and Grace, and Miss Ever Bilena. The Grand Coronation Night is the highly-anticipated ultimate moment of the prestigious pageant’s season, after the official candidates have undergone a series of training in various fields and have had several public appearances, including a mall tour, fashion show, and the annual Charity Day and Parade of Beauties.
It was indeed a memorable evening indeed as 24 official candidates vied for the much-coveted titles in a Philippine festival-inspired production staged by GMA 7. Charlene Gonzales, Binibining Pilipinas Universe 1994, hosted the Grand Coronation Night together with renowned TV host Paolo Bediones. Guest performers, among them the Whiplash Dancers, Paolo Paraiso, Alfred Vargas, Marco Alcaraz, Aljur Abrenica, and the Angelos provided entertainment for the jampacked crowd during the event.
After thorough deliberation, the judges selected the top ten finalists and eventually the winners during an exciting Q&A portion. The distinguished Board of Judges for this year’s pageant was headed by Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte. Other members of the panel included US Ambassador Kristie Kenney, Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura, Philippine Ambassador to Spain Joseph Bernardo, United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines Chairman Vijay Mallya, Jean Moueix of Chateau Petrus, Entrepreneurs School of Asia founder Vivienne Tan, Sofitel Philippine Plaza President Oscar Salvacion, Marimar’s Marian Rivera, actor Dennis Trillo, and Ateneo Blue Eagles star player Chris Tiu. The newest batch of reigning queens showcased grace under pressure, breezing their way through the judges’ questions.
Other candidates who won special awards included Rizza Liz Catigan (Miss Talent), Evangeline May Castillo (Miss Friendship), and Roxanne Tadique (Manila Bulletin’s Reader’s Choice).
The reigining queens will be undergoing a series of training sessions in personality development, catwalk skills, among others to prepare them for the various international pageants wherein they will serve as official Philippine representatives. Fernandez will be competing in the Miss International Pageant in Tokyo, Japan, while Barrientos will be representing the country in the Miss Universe pageant to be held in Vietnam. The newly-crowned Bb. Pilipinas World, Janina San Miguel, will be competing in the Miss World Pageant to be held in Ukraine.
